The Stonelaw Practice

Practice Nurses

Sister Audrey O'Boyle and Sister Elaine Maclean

Both nurses are available by appointment.  They offer a wide range of services as listed below:

New Patient Medical Examinations

Having registered with the Practice you will be invited to attend one of our Practice Nurses for an examination.  This is a basic check up, but it allows us to gain important medical information about you before your notes arrive from your previous doctor. Also it provides opportunities for vaccination boosters and general health and lifestyle issues to be addressed. Please bring a small sample of urine with you in a non-glass container.

Contraception & Well Women Services

The doctors and  Practice Nurses are happy to give advice on contraception and family planning to teenagers and adults, whether male or female. All consultations for contraceptive advice are, of course, confidential.  Same day consultations are available with the Practice Nurses or GPs for emergency contraception. If you would like more information about these services, please speak to one of our Practice Nurses.

The Practice Nurses also offer breast self examination advice and general health advice. Consultation is by appointment.

Cervical Smears

This test is recommended for all women aged 20-60 years.  In normal circumstances this test is carried out every 3 years.

The cervical smear test checks to see if the cells that make up the surface of the neck of your womb (the cervix) are developing normally. It aims to identify any abnormalities in the cells.

The test result will be posted to the patient approximately 4-8 weeks following the smear test.

Travel Advice and Immunisations

The Practice Nurses are skilled at offering professional advice for potential travellers to exotic destinations. This includes vaccinations, advice regarding protection against tropical diseases such as malaria and diarrhoea illnesses. They also offer general travel advice (e.g. deep venous thrombosis prophylaxis on long haul flights). The Practice is a registered Yellow Fever Centre and we keep Yellow Fever Vaccine in stock.

N.B. Tablets for malaria prophylaxis must be purchased by travellers. They cannot be prescribed on the NHS

N.B. Remember to allow sufficient time to get your vaccinations done before travel, as some vaccinations are done as courses over several weeks or months.

Chronic Disease Management

The Practice maintains registers of all patients in the Practices with:

The Practice Nurses provide annual reviews for the patients with some of these chronic problems and set their standards to guidelines produced by evidence based medical research. There is a close liaison with the doctors at these clinics.  If you have one or more of these diseases, you will be sent an invitation to come along for review.

We also have Health Care Support Workers who assist the Practice Nurses, by seeing patients for blood pressure checks and where necessary, carrying out blood tests.
