An Introduction to our Practice
Our Practice is based in Rutherglen. The town of Rutherglen itself is one of the most historic towns in Scotland. More than 500 years older than Glasgow, Rutherglen received its Royal Charter from David I in 1126. Rutherglen was also the scene of some action during the Wars of Independence. A truce with the English was signed here in 1297 and Rutherglen Castle, then occupied by Edward II, was laid siege to by Robert the Bruce in 1309. In the 17th Century, Rutherglen was a strong hold of the Covenanters. Before Glasgow became the major city it now is, it was regarded as an outlying town of Rutherglen. However, the boom Glasgow experienced as an industrial city in the 18th and 19th Centuries brought many new industries and inhabitants. It is believed there were up to 20 coal pits sunk in and around Rutherglen at various times though the industry had died out in the town by the Second World War.
This Practice dates back to before the inception of the NHS in 1948. It was founded by Drs Robert Low and Thomas Watt who were respected and esteemed GPs in the Rutherglen area.
